Message-from-the-Dean.jpgMessage from the Dean

by Dr. Mickey Shachar, Dean of the College of Health and Human Services

The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) has focused in 2017 on the restructuring of its academic programs to be more competitive and to shorten students’ time to graduation. The main change is that each program would have a no-concentration degree plan with a base of core courses that would encompass the academic and professional skill competencies required in the discipline. Students who wish to specialize will have professional concentrations to choose from. News from and updates to the programs:

Our Homeland Security (HLS) Programs (BSHLS & MSHLS) - under Dr. Rudolph Bustos, have demonstrated wonderful growth that exceeded even our own conservative forecasts! Emergency and Disaster Management (EDM) of natural disasters was developed and incorporated as a specialty concentration under the HLS programs at both levels, to complete and complement the program.

The Health Administration Department - under Dr. Gayl Anglin, has launched the new Bachelor of Science in Health Administration (BSHA) degree program, to augment the current Master program, and in 2018 we will see additional launches of BSHA concentrations.

Dr. Rolena Stephenson, Department Chair of Health Sciences, has led the restructuring of the BSHS programs to be competitive and allow graduates of the bachelor concentrations to apply specific credits earned at Trident towards their future master programs (see Trident Catalog for details).

Last, but surely not least is our Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences (Ph.D. HS) degree program, headed by Dr. Traci Marin who joined Trident and the College in 2017, bringing with her a wealth of experience in professional academic research in the health field. The Ph.D. program has been revamped to allow able and dedicated students to complete their degree within 4-5 years.

All in all, an amazing academic feat accomplished in the past year, that could only have happened with the continuous pursuit of academic quality and an ongoing educational commitment by our dedicated college team of faculty.

We look forward to see our current students graduate with knowledge and skills for life, and to embrace and lead new students in the coming 2018 year.

Get a Good Hold on the REINS of Your Transition: Part 3 – The Interview

The next concept to take hold of in the REINS (Resume, Education, Interview, Networking, and Service) of transition discussion is the Interview.

I was considering transitioning to retirement a few years ago and felt I was prepared for an interview with a company who flew me out to TN for the interview. I used to teach interview skills to high school students, so I was pretty sure I knew what I was doing.

I really was killing it during the interview and felt the three-member panel eating out of my hands. I was a CSM at the time, and the board panel was a 2LT and 2 retired Army Master Sergeants. The final question of the interview was ‘what is your expected salary?’ I was not prepared for this question.

I told them that my salary was public information, then commenced to insult them by stating that I didn’t want to work for a company that intended to supplement my retirement pay with a half salary to keep me at my current rate, but instead wanted to be paid what I was worth on the open market. Needless to say, my worth on the open market was zero to them at that point, because the position was a set salary range (like most civilian positions), and I knew the range. It was the most humiliating response (for all of us) I could have come up with and I am still embarrassed about it today.

The point of the story is PREPARE and PRACTICE. Research the organization you’re going to interview with, know what they do, how they do it, and know their vision, mission, and values. Be honest in the interview but be prepared. There are several difficult questions to be especially prepared for. “Tell us about yourself?” “What are your strengths and weaknesses, and how do you overcome your weaknesses?” (I actually once had someone I was interviewing argue that they didn’t have ANY weaknesses - we ended the interview there), and “What are your salary expectations?” Be prepared for these and practice them with someone who will be honest with you. There is no magical interview formula, but these key points should help you navigate the waters of the interview. See you next month when we’ll talk about Networking.

Student Experience

New Recognition Program – Trident Triples
by Christina Hoang and Kendra Temple

When a student has a great experience at their college, they often progress into another degree at the same university. Trident University continues to strengthen our community through new initiatives and programs that improve the student experience and recognizes those who have worked hard to achieve accomplishments personally, professionally, and academically.

Our newest recognition program at Trident is called the Trident Triples, which highlights alumni who have earned three degrees or more at Trident. Each January, Trident will identify and reach out to our newest Graduates joining this exclusive group and will work to highlight them in the Alumni section of the website, in our Newsletter, and on our Blog. The Trident Triples are alumni who have:
  •  Gold Level: Completed a degree at each program level
  •  Silver Level: Completed a bachelor and two more masters
Look out for our featured Triple Grad profiles throughout 2018! We hope to have many of you join this exclusive group in the years to come.
