Dr.-Lisa-Mohanty1-250x250Message From The Dean

by Dr. Lisa Mohanty, Dean of University College
University College launched five new popular programs this year: Associate of Science in Professional Studies, Certificate of Medical Billing, Certificate of Medical Billing and Coding, Certificate of Computerized Accounting, and the Diploma in Computerized Accounting. Funding options are now available so please check with your advisor if you are interested in any of these new programs.

I also wanted to take the time to highlight some outstanding accomplishments by our University College faculty. Alex Gorlovsky was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award for the Winter 2018 quarter. This award is based on student nominations and course evaluation survey data during the Winter quarter. Mr. Gorlovsky has been teaching at Trident for over six years in the areas of Art History and Trident Student Experience.  Also, George del Hierro was the recipient of the Quarterly Trustee Award in 2018 for exhibiting exemplary service on behalf of Trident University and our students. Mr. del Hierro is a course coordinator and instructor for our business and communications courses in the general education program.

Finally, the academic leadership had the opportunity to attend the WASC- Academic Resources Conference which is sponsored by our accrediting commission in San Francisco, CA. My fellow deans and I were able to attend several sessions on best teaching practices and assessing student learning outcomes. Professional development of our faculty and staff is an integral part of Trident University. Learning is a continuous process which can make us better educators.

Improvements in the Classroom
by Brittney Drake

Trident University is dedicated to helping our students reach their educational goals. So dedicated in fact, that we offer a scholarship opportunity for the 2018 Military Fiscal Year. The Military Success Scholarship (MSS) was created to encourage academic progress and continuous enrollment for eligible undergraduate Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard members currently serving in the U.S. Armed Services, while also minimizing out of pocket costs.

What does it take to earn MSS? Commitment! Commit to staying on track with your educational plan and maintain a minimum of 2.0 GPA. Beginning October 1, 2017, when you successfully complete four courses (16 semester credits), a $500 scholarship will be applied to your 5th course and beyond through September 30, 2018.

If you are eligible for Military Tuition Assistance (TA) Benefits, we encourage you to utilize your benefits. There are four remaining sessions until the end of the 2018 fiscal year. We are seeing many students utilize the Military Success Scholarship to date.

We encourage students to control the amount of scholarship support you can receive to reduce the cost of your education and to accelerate your graduation date!

Academic Spotlight

Trident’s first Teaching Excellence Award was presented to Dr. Ken Cromer for the Winter 2015-2016 session. We are pleased to have continued this tradition of this entirely student-driven quarterly award. Its objective is to provide an opportunity for students to nominate faculty based on their classroom experience. Faculty recipients are awarded based on strong commitment to quality teaching and learning, and the use of effective and innovative practices. Since its inception there have been eight faculty members who received the award:

The New Way Companies are Using Text as an Avenue of Communication
by Emanuel Sepulveda

In today’s ever-changing digitalized world, texting has become the new way of communicating, whether it’s with your family, friends, colleagues, boss, and even your recruiter.

In the modern-day recruiting world, the recruiters are now texting their prospects, and they are not the only ones. Hiring managers are using texting in the entire hiring process. Texting is being used to conduct reference checks, background checks, and interviews. So, make sure all your references are aware that they might get a text or a phone call from a prospective hiring manager, and that they are themselves familiar with texting responses.

There are real benefits in using text versus email in the recruiting and hiring process:
  1. Text messages are delivered immediately and directly to a device that most of us have with us at all times.
  2. A text can be sent from any location where there is a data connection, and there's no waiting for an email client software to get up and running.
  3. Text messages are typed out on a mobile phone keypad instead of on a full-sized keyboard, which encourages shorter messages that get to the point.
  4. Spam messages and group emails have to some extent diluted the impact of email. Messages sent over email can easily get lost or inadvertently filtered out of the inbox.
The increase of a digital workplace is taking over. Help yourself by forward thinking and become familiar with texting before it becomes the means of communicating, as email once did.

ALUMNIFIRE - Changing Lives, One Job at a Time

AlumniFire Success Story
Have you utilized Trident’s newest platform, AlumniFire, to network and connect with fellow Students and Alumni?
If the answer is no, you are missing out. Robert Sanchez, class of `18, recently joined our AlumniFire community and landed a job with Booz Allen Hamilton as a result. How did this happen? Fellow Alum, Patrick Scanlon, class of `09 & `16, posted employment opportunities with his organization informing fellow students and alumni that he would be happy to assist them with the application process if interested in working there. Robert, who recently transitioned from the military and was struggling to find a career, took Patrick up on this offer by responding to his AlumniFire post, and just like that, Robert and Patrick are now co-workers representing Trident at Booz Allen Hamilton together. “This was a direct result of networking on AlumniFire and I'm extremely grateful!,” said Robert.

This is the power of AlumniFire and is just one example of how our students and alumni are making valuable connections, opening doors, and finding job leads from members of their Trident community. If you’ve already joined, welcome! If you haven’t, don’t miss this opportunity!
