Message from the Dean

COE Faculty 2017.jpg
by Dr. Heidi Gilligan, Dean of the College of Education
The College of Education continues its mission to develop educators, leaders, and scholars. The Doctor of Education and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership programs continue to thrive with a large 2017 graduating class and a revised Masters of Arts in Education program begins next year.
Under the direction of Dr. Wenling Li, 23 students completed the Ph.D. program in 2017. And 17 students successfully completed the Ed.D. program. Twenty of our doctoral graduates attended the commencement and hooding ceremony in July. The achievements of our doctoral students would not be possible without the support of our Doctoral Mentors, Dr. Allison Deegan, Dr. Carey Ford, and Dr. Michael Wesolek.
Dr. Shari Farris, Department Chair of Education, is leading the development of a revised 30-unit Master of Arts in Education (M.A.E.D.) program. The program will begin in 2018 and includes updated courses on educational history, policy, leadership, and organizational theory. We are excited to provide a core curriculum and concentration options to better prepare our graduates to positively influence education practice and policy in K12 and post-secondary settings.
The College of Education will continue its work to revise the curriculum and enhance the student experience in the classroom. An immediate goal is the implementation of formative evaluations of the Ed.D. and M.A.E.D. programs which will include feedback from our students, faculty, and alumni to inform our decisions on future program development and improvement.
As Dean, I look forward to the next year and recognize that the achievements outlined above would not have been possible without the support my outstanding Trident colleagues and the Trident Community.

Get a Good Hold on the REINS of Your Transition - your Resume, your Education, the Interview, Networking, and Serving

by Mark Weedon

Very recently, I made the always-bragged-about but ever-scary leap from the comfortable confines of the military, over the cliff of retirement, and into the pool of civilian life. I enjoyed 29 years of a steady income, steady and free medical insurance, extremely low cost life insurance, and a structured work environment (outside of the occasional chaos of combat). All that, and the predictable command and controlled hierarchy, along with a comradery felt by no other organization in the world taught me some important lessons.

There are five fundamental areas I want to talk about: your Resume, your Education, the Interview, Networking, and Serving. I call these the REINS of successful transition from military to civilian life.

The process for successful transition should begin almost immediately upon a new assignment or job/career. That’s right, every time we start a new position, we should always be preparing for when it will come to an end. This isn’t a green light to not give 100% to your current role; it just means you should always expect change will come. That change could come at anytime, from shortly after it begins, to 2 or 3 years down the road, all the way up to 20 or 30 years or more. It doesn’t matter how long it lasts, a good exit strategy will always put you in a better position to make the transition as smooth and beneficial as possible for all involved.

Over the next five issues of Trident TODAY, we will take the deep dive into each of the 5 REINS, and I will share my experience and training. If implemented, this information will put you way ahead of your peers and much better prepare you for your next transition, whatever that may be. Stay tuned!

Student Experience

Trident University has a long-standing commitment to consciously improve the student experience. Recently, Trident University has created a “Support Center” where students have a dedicated team to support them throughout their path to graduation.
Trident believes in building trust and a strong relationship with the students with subject matter experts. The support center takes a personal approach to show students their main point of contact. Some of the features of the support center gives students the opportunity to read more about their advisor, office hours, and a convenient link to make an appointment with their support.

Academic Spotlight
